Balanced Rock: The North Salem Review of Art, Photography, and Literature

Balanced Rock is now accepting prose, poetry, artwork, and photography on any subject for the next issue. The deadline to submit is May 31, 2014.
Balanced Rock: North Salem Review of Art, Photography, and Literature is a self-supporting literary and visual arts journal celebrating creativity and community. A project of the Ruth Keeler Memorial Library, Friends of the Ruth Keeler Memorial Library, the North Salem Writers' Workshop, friends and neighbors, we publish the new work of emerging and established writers and artists.
Note that submissions will not be returned, but we will notify you by email if your work will be published.
Due to the size of our staff and time limitations, editors do not routinely comment on submissions. If your manuscript is chosen for publication, we may suggest proofing and editing. No changes will be made to your work without consent. The editors oversee all design and elements of style decision.
Submissions for prose (fiction and non-fiction), poetry, and visual art should be sent via email to
, following the format below. We request a submission fee of $20 to help cover printing costs. We will acknowledge receipt of your submission and payment. Please submit only previously unpublished work. If your material is selected, you will retain the copyright and sign a release form for the work to be included in the journal. Format for Prose (fiction and nonfiction): Submit one prose piece, no more than 2,500 words. Your work should be double-spaced, using 12-point, Times New Roman font, saved as a .doc or .docx file. Number your pages please.
Format for Poetry: Up to three poems may be submitted. Your work should be a .doc or .docx file, using 12-point, Times New Roman font. You may submit both a prose piece and poetry with one $20 submission fee.
Format for Visual Art and Photography: Submit up to three works of art (photographs, illustrations, conceptual works). Only 300dpi, high-resolution .jpg files are accepted.
Title page: Please include a title page with your work to help us identify you, with the following information: Your name, address, phone number, email address, and the category of submission, i.e. “Fiction,” “Non-fiction,” “Poetry,” “Visual Art.” Note that submissions will not be returned, but we will notify you by email if your work will be published.

As a community endeavor, Balanced Rock: The North Salem Review of Art, Photography, and Literature is staffed entirely by volunteers from North Salem, New York.
Our resident editors who will review submissions are:
Pam Pooley, Managing Editor, is the facilitator of the North Salem Writers' Workshop. She was an Emmy-Award winning public television producer and instructor at the Teachers College, Columbia University.
Perdita Burlingame, Fiction Editor, has been involved in the publishing world as an editor, as well as a translator for over fifty years. She is currently a reader and
in-house editor for Little, Brown and Company.
Francis Schell, Non-Fiction Editor, was an editor with Reader’s Digest for 33 years. Formerly the Executive Editor International for Reader's Digest and Reader's Digest Condensed Books, he currently is a writer for several magazines.
Laura Henderson Reznick, Poetry Editor, is a published poet and holds an MFA from Hunter College in creative writing/poetry. She had extensive teaching experience in the CUNY system while working on her Ph.D. at the CUNY Graduate Center and is currently teaching English literature at Union College in Schenectady.
Constance Sullivan, Visual Arts Editor, has produced widely-acclaimed books on art and photography for major publishers including, "Landscapes of the Civil War" (Alfred A. Knopf), "Women Photographers" (Harry N. Abrams), "Photographers at Work" (Smithsonian Institution Press).
Our Advisory Board members are: Helen Anthony, Carolyn Reznick, and Cathleen Sulli.
